Capt’n Krunkles

Picked this guy up during the rare beer tuesday at The Charleston Beer Exchange.  I had never really had a Black IPA that i could think of, so i was definitely needing to try this one out.  Coming in with a ABV: of 7.51% this is not a growler you could sit down and crush in one night.  I mean you could but the outcome in the morning may not be favorable.

So as you can see the color on this one is as the black IPA name implies this is pretty black.  The color of the beer tries to play tricks on you when you take a whiff.  First i got a big smell of pineapple and mango then came along dark roasted malt with some coffee and cocoa nibs, along with some pine.  The trick is your not expecting the hops in a beer that’s this dark.  Well at least I’m not.  Now you taste it and really get the dark malt, and some cocoa nibs, which i felt covers up the hops some.  But the hops fight back and come in with a nice blast of citrus and and smooth pine finish.  A different beer but still a pretty good one.
